We’re gonna have a huge explosion of Hannah interviews in a few weeks, thanks to the support of the indie-film blogosphere. We’re working on a big blog project, and stayed tuned for more. But for now…
There’s something kinda cool and crazy about the fact that Joe Swanberg’s Hannah Takes the Stairs is a summer movie, technically. While it opens at the end of this summer (August 22 in New York at the IFC Center) and certainly is far far far from what one would call a conventional “blockbuster,” it sort of is a blockbuster in a weird, American indie kinda way. So, I wanted to poll some of the cast/crew about their favorite films and music during the Summer of 2007. Unofficially asking what other summer entertainment can you recommend to audiences. Last up, for now, is Hannah director/writer/editor/newlywed Joe Swanberg:
Me: What is your favorite movie of Summer 2007 and why?
Joe Swanberg: My favorite movie of Summer 2007 is my favorite movie of any summer: Stand By Me. I love the end, after they have all had this incredible experience together, how they just kind of say goodbye and go back to their lives. Some of them stay friends and some of them kind of drift away from each other. It reminds me of making a movie, the way you form a tight family with other people who are sharing the experience, and when it’s over, you have to go back to your life. Whether you remain close with the people afterwards or not, you are changed by it and you have shared something special together. Also, River Phoenix is really amazing in it.
Me: What is your favorite album of Summer 2007 and why?
Joe Swanberg: My imaginary version of Kevin Bewersdorf’s upcoming album Babes. I have only heard a few samples of some of the tracks, but I like it so far and I’m really looking forward to the whole thing. For now I just fantasize about it..
See more of Joe’s work, in ‘Hannah Takes the Stairs,’ on August 22 at the IFC Center in New York.
