I started Cormac McCarthy’s latest book, The Road, earlier this summer. I had heard good things, it got favorable reviews, and even won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. I have so little time for “fun reading,” that I often need such validation before plunging into a new book. When I realized I would be spending a weekend in Marfa, I decided to put The Road aside, and save it for that trip. Afterall, McCarthy claims a trip to that region of Texas inspired this book in the first place. Having finished it this weekend, poolside at the Thunderbird Motel, I have to say that all its hype is well worth it. Even if you aren’t spending a weekend in desolate West Texas, I recommend checking it out. It’s a great, quick, and engrossing read.
