The 2007 Austin City Limits Music Festival begins today. Jarren and I are studying the schedule, deciding what we’re gonna witness, bummed about the White Stripes cancellation, and prepping for the onslaught. For the first time in the outdoor festival’s history, there seems to be an even larger phenomenon of unofficial “after hours” events surrounding ACL. Typically, the extent of it would be a few shows in downtown clubs and maybe a Jane Magazine (R.I.P.) late-night party in South Austin.
This year, however, it will be hard not to find some ACL-related party in downtown Austin each night of the weekend. We’re invited to check some of these out, so who knows, maybe it will be a relaxing time. Though, I’m not quite sure how motivated I will be to venture into downtown Austin after a full day in the sun. The ACL “After Hours” events that I know about, include:
“The Hot Freaks” shows at Mohawk and Club DeVille: On Friday and Saturday night, the Hot Freaks coalition of indie music blogs will host concerts by the likes of Grizzly Bear, Art Brut, St. Vincent, and more.
Paste Magazine, OurStage, and more at Maggie Mae’s: Thursday through Saturday, a bevy of sponsors are hosting unannounced acts at 6th Street destination Maggie Mae’s. Thursday was CMT night, Friday is Daytrotter night, and Saturday is Paste night.
IMEEM DJ Sets at Beauty Bar: The popular MP3/video sharing service will bring together a lineup of impressive ACL acts such as M.I.A. Bloc Party, and Voxtrot, to spin DJ sets at the 7th Street venue.
In addition, the Ausin City Limits television show will spend the weekend taping episodes by artists such as Crowded House, Arcade Fire, Wilco, and more.
