Now, here’s the thing: I appreciate a good rivalry as much as the next guy, but I’m starting to believe that this whole Kanye vs. 50 release-date tug-of-war is just a fabrication of record company publicity. Which makes sense, mind you. Album sales are perpetually sliding, execs are worried, artists aren’t invincible… so you look at a coincidence on the calendar and play it up. Add to this the fact that you have the first September 11 since the tragic day in 2001, falling on a Tuesday (a.k.a. the day albums are released). How do you correct the consumers to actually get them motivated to go to Best Buy or Wal-Mart and buy some pop music? You make it an event, something so juicy that it could become the cover of Rolling Stone. Then again, Idolator is simply reminded of Hall & Oates.
