Ive been super busy the past few days and have been AWOL on the blast of awards season happenings over the past few days. A quick update: In an hour or so, I’ll be posting the DGA noms on the main site. The Directors Guild will likely solve a lot of questions, particularly the big question best picture category. My very last minute predictions are as follows:
Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood
Joel & Ethan Coen, No Country For Old Men
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Joe Wright, Atonement
And then there’s what happened yesterday, most notably the pretty surprising decision made by the Golden Globes to cancel the ceremony altogether and now offer an hour long “press conference” Sunday night. I’m extremely curious to see how this goes, and while I’m disappointed I won’t get to watch the real deal, at least there will still be some element of live surprise to the event. One award show that somehow managed to get a non-picketed event last night (they really hate those Globes and NBC, don’t they?) was the Critics Choice awards, with the complete winners listed here. They are very ho-hum, confirming predictions people have had for a while (except maybe Julie Christie, who now appears to be the official frontunner) – though I’d imagine Oscar won’t end up looking like the Critics Choice this year.
