The Academy released the final shortlist for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film nominees. Of the nine finalists, there are some notable omissions: Persepolis (from France), The Orphanage (from Spain), and – perhaps most notable – 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (from Romania). All three were considered virtual locks for a nomination, and all three received some of the best reviews of the year. That’s not to say the shortlist is without total merit. There are some great films on the list (including Kazakhstan’s Mongol and Brazil’s The Year My Parents Went on Vacation), but it’s still a weird list.
