With apologies to Brian Wilson, “Heroes and Villains” seems to be a popular theme in the saturated realm of subway marketing lately. For NBC’s new season of Heroes, the network has taken an inventive spin on something New Yorkers are all too familiar with: graffiti/vandalism/culture-jamming/art on NYC subway ads. Instead of allowing taggers the opportunity to deface the advertisements, NBC has done it for them, officially. It looks so authentic that I had to step very close to multiple ads to confirm it was manufactured:
I don’t know if this is the first campaign of its kind, but it’s pretty inventive.
