iW NEWS | Magnet Unveils Genre-filled "Six Shooter Film Series"

Magnolia Pictures‘ genre label Magnet Releasing unveiled its “Six Shooter Film Series,” a packaged theatrical release of six films from what it describes as “the vanguard of quality worldwide genre cinema.” Each film, which originates in six different countries, aims to bring fans of horror, sci-fi, alternative comedy and Asian cinema, according to a company announcement. Magnet calls the series a “labor of love” for Magnet/Magnolia which has spearheaded genre titles in recent years, including Korea’s “The Host” by Bong Joon-ho and “Ong Bak” by Tony Jaa. Kicking off the series is Tomas Alfredson‘s “Let the Right One In” from Sweden, which won best narrative feature at the Tribeca Film Festival, opening in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, October 24 with a regional expansion thereafter. The series will contine the following month with Hal Halberman and Jeremy Passmore‘s “Special” (U.S.), followed by Nacho Vigalondo‘s “Timecrimes” (Spain), Franck Vestiel‘s “Eden Log” (France) in January, Ollie Blackburn‘s “Donkey Punch” (U.K.) in February and Hitoshi Matsumoto‘s “Big Man Japan” (Japan) in March. The packaging of the films in a series is reminiscent of the “Shooting Gallery Film Series,” a program spearheaded by current Magnolia chief Eamonn Bowles when he headed now closed distributor Shooting Gallery earlier in the decade. “”Some of the most exciting, forward-thinking cinema today falls under the genre label and deserves a showcase,” commented Bowles in a statement. “In the tradition of ‘The Shooting Gallery Film Series,’ we’re putting together a group of films whose quality far outweighs most of what’s on offer from Hollywood. And what better way to kick things off than with ‘Let the Right One In,’ which is one of the best films of the year – period.” [Brian Brooks]
