David (Ben Kingsley) deceives his long-term lover, Carolyn (Patricia Clarkson) when he meets someone new

This May-December romance is set against an academic backdrop, like last year’s queue-worthy “Starting Out in the Evening,” starring a magnificent Frank Langella. Here, David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley) is a literature professor besotted by Consuela Castillo (Penélope Cruz), a Cuban pupil. She is as wise and unguarded in love as he is ignorant and stingy. I loved watching the unpredictable trajectory of their relationship, and the superb cast including Patricia Clarkson as David’s long-term lover, Peter Sarsgaard as his resentful son, Dennis Hopper as his best friend and Deborah Harry as his friend’s wife. Spanish director Isabel Coixet (“My Life Without Me,” The Secret Life of Words”) has made a sexy and thoughtful film.
