Poster of the Week

carmen_baby.jpg

It says it all at the bottom. From a story by Prospere [sic] Mérimée. It’s another adaptation of Carmen. And we never get enough because we’re gonna like watching, reading about, and listening to sassy whores for the next thousand years. This Radley Metzger nugget may be high-minded dirty dirt, but this poster is unforgettably forgettable, baby. It’s cool…it’s hot…it’s a parody of a parody, but really not. The literally lip-licking Uta Levka, who went on to star in Die Slowly, You’ll Love It More, The Horror of Blackwood Castle, De Sade (natch), and How Girls Love Men of Today, is definitely ready for her close-up here. What I love about this poster, other than the almost wondrously mechanical idea of sexiness in its conception and pose, and the mind-blowing misogyny of the tagline, is that classic sense of desperation that fuels it, and so many other one-sheets of its era. “Come see this movie, please please, we promise there’s a woman in it who’ll come down off the screen and actually suck your dick while you watch. Please….”
