In the wake of Venice fest screenings last week, Claire Denis‘ “35 Rhums” arrived in Toronto with quite a buzz. Writing in indieWIRE, Shane Danielsen called it, “magnificently directed, faultlessly performed, alert to the beauty and mystery of commonplace things.” Watching the film the other day here in Canada, I have to agree, its a wonderful movie that I’ve had a hard time shaking. “35 Rhums” offers quiet moments with its characters — each striving for someone, or something, else. Agnes Godard‘s photography and Tindersticks‘ music, in particular, are striking and beautiful.
