Today, indieWIRE posted a (very) trimmed down version of my recent interview with Arnaud Desplechin. I am so thankful to have been given space on the site for this conversation, and I hope that it encourages readers to check out both the Desplechin retrospective at the IFC Center as well as the upcoming release of Desplechin’s A Christmas Tale next Friday, November 14. That week, I’ll probably be pulling a Mathieu Amalric double bill, as my favorite actor hits the screen in both A Christmas Tale and as the new Bond villain in Quantum Of Solace. Can’t wait!
This Friday, I’ll be posting my complete, unedited interview with Arnaud Desplechin on this blog; it’s about 4 times larger than the indieWIRE piece (I have no word count on here, as I have often been told by disgruntled readers…). Next Wednesday, I hope to post a review of A Christmas Tale here as well. In the meantime, check out the aformentioned indieWIRE conversation or, if you’re feeling nostalgic, a trip back to my first interview with Arnaud around the time of Kings and Queen; so many of the ideas and themes overlap, it can’t hurt to take a look. The issue, of course, with all of these interviews is that Desplechin’s films are such dense, rich texts, that to discuss them so briefly and in isolation from one another makes it very tough to capture the complexity of his work. On the other hand, he is such a humble, modest guy that he almost refuses to engage in anything as pretentious as a discussion of that complexity. One day I am going to get some undivided time and work my way through these films with him (fingers crossed). In the meantime, these snapshots are all I have. I hope they’re remotely worthwhile.
