I’m so happy with this year’s Independent Spirit Award nominations. And, when I say that, I’m not even talking about the major categories. Except for Wendy and Lucy getting a Best Feature nod, which includes friend/producer Anish Savjani. In all the other/cooler categories, a plethora of pals received well-deserved nominations. Including:
The Medicine For Melancholy crew got three nominations: Best First Feature, Best Cinematography, and the “Someone to Watch” award for writer/director/karaoker Barry Jenkins.
Margaret Brown received not one, but two, nominations (Best Documentary and the “Truer than Fiction” award) for her great documentary, The Order of Myths.
Sean Baker is competing against himself for the John Cassevetes award, for his 2008 fest hit Prince of Broadway and his recent theatrical release, Take Out.
Dynamo filmmaker Lynn Shelton got a “Someone to Watch” nod for her smart and funny SXSW premiere, My Effortless Brilliance.
Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy are up for the annual Producers Award, for their 2008 work on I’ll Come Running and Treeless Mountain.
Alex Holdridge, Seth Caplan, and Scoot McNairy are up for the Cassevetes award for their romantic comedy, In Search of a Midnight Kiss.
And the list goes on. So happy to see so many talented filmmakers and good friends recognized today! It’s gonna be a hell of a party.
