Rob Epstein, THE TIMES…and MILK

Rob Epstein, THE TIMES...and MILK

What an exciting and important weekend we have coming up at Enzian! Gus Van Sant’s MILK–the extraordinary, (already) multiple award-winning biopic about the political rise and tragic death of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person elected to office in California–opens exclusively in Central Florida tomorrow (Friday, 12/12). The film that’s been called “An American Classic” by Peter Travers in Rolling Stone just won Best Actor honors for Sean Penn from both the New York Film Critics’ Circle and the LA Film Critics Circle, as well as Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Josh Brolin) from the NY Critics. Locally, the Orlando Weekly gave the film 5 stars and the Orlando Sentinel called it “one of the top two films of 2008.”

In conjunction with the release of MILK in the Orlando market, Enzian and Margaret Nolan and Kangagirl Productions are bringing a very special event to the theater on Saturday, 12/13 at 12 noon: filmmaker Rob Epstein and a rare 35mm screening of his 1985 Academy Award winning documentary, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK. Rob is one of the foremost documentary filmmakers in the country, especially when it comes to gay themes and history, and is a two-time Oscar winner (1989’s COMMON THREADS: STORIES FROM THE QUILT was his other) and director of the highly acclaimed PARAGRAPH 175 and THE CELLULOID CLOSET. We are honored to have him here all the way from San Francisco to intro the film and do Q&A afterward. As this brilliant and powerful film approaches its 25th anniversary, and prejudice and bigotry unfortunately continue to affect so many lives as evidenced by the passing of Proposition 8 and Amendment 2 in California and Florida, don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet the filmmaker who created this life-affirming testament to courage and hope. Details for both MILK and THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK are available at http://enzian.org/
