This morning’s BAFTA nods were annoying in a variety of different ways, but because Im facing the time constraints of Sundance prep I’ll offer five particular annoyances:
5. Tilda Swinton for Best Supporting Actress.
I love Tilda. Love her. But I think even she would agree her nod for Burn After Reading was rubbish (though, really, so was Amy Adams and Freida Pinto’s nods in the same category. Pinto just stands there through most of Slumdog). Swinton certainly does a great job with what the role offers, which isn’t a whole lot. Not enough to excel beyond some of the women she took the place of: Rosemarie DeWitt, Viola Davis, Elsa Zylberstein, Alexis Zegerman… I would have even preferred her similarly small role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to get a nod. She was one of the very few highlights of that film for me. Which leads me to…
4. All that Jolie-Pitt film love:
A combined EIGHTEEN nods for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Changeling??? And a combined EIGHT for Milk, WALL-E, The Wrestler Rachel Getting Married and Happy-Go-Lucky?? Button and Changeling are most certainly the two most overrated films of the year. I understand some of the tech nods, but pic for Button and director for both of them are unfortunate, as are Pitt and Jolie’s lead acting nods (especially when Anne Hathaway, Sally Hawkins, Leonardo diCaprio, Michael Fassbender and Richard Jenkins all failed to get nods).
3. The Dark Knight‘s best pic-dir snub:
Whatever voter honestly considered The Reader to be a more honorable cinematic work than The Dark Knight is insane (and, really, same goes or Button and Frost/Nixon).
2. Kate Winslet‘s Double Nods:
Like Tilda, it pains me to ever include Kate Winslet on a list of this negative connotation… But she doesn’t deserve two nods in the lead category. Personally, her work in The Reader failed to really impress me, and I’m all for the rewards all heading toward her work in Revolutionary Road. Though mainly her dual nods piss me off because….
1. Sally Hawkins wasn’t nominated because of them:
This is the BRITISH Academy Awards. How could you not honor your own in a performance that is so ridiculously charming and focused is a huge slap in the face to Hawkins and Happy-Go-Lucky itself, which didn’t get a SINGLE nomination. No Mike Leigh for original screenplay (but Changeling is deserving???). No Eddie Marsan for best supporting actor . You give Mamma fucking Mia a best british film nomination but not Happy-Go-Lucky.
This is all embarrassing in a Golden Globes kind of way, BAFTA. You should be ashamed.
