Very happy for all parties involved (Joe, Anish, Jess, IFC, SXSW, etc.) on the glowing reviews that have started to break about Joe Swanberg’s fifth feature, Alexander The Last. The film is receiving unprecedented coverage for something that is essentially going straight to cable VOD. It hopefully continues the growing trend of mainstream film journalists reviewing films that are bypassing theatrical in favor for straight-to-digital. I’m seeing the film during its brick-and-mortar premiere on Saturday night in Austin. As I told Joe, I’m excited to see one of his movies in a theater for the first time, and it’s ironic that it’s the one not opening in theaters.
Those not attending SXSW can see it on IFC’s VOD channel beginning that same day. Meanwhile, check out the strong recommendations of Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere, David Denby at The New Yorker, and Owen Gleiberman at Entertainment Weekly. Joe does have his detractors and critics, to be sure, and that is one of the things he and I will discuss during our Studio SX one-on-one chat Saturday afternoon.
