April is always the month when film festivals collide, with tons launching and continuing through the next few weeks. This week alone, we’ll have the beginning of the NY Gen Art Film Festival (of which I’m on the Features Jury), the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in North Carolina, and the continuation of the New Directors/New Films Festival in Manhattan, the AFI Dallas Film Festival in Texas, and the popular Sarasota and Florida Film Festivals (the latter in nearby Orlando). Next weekend, both Gen Art and ND/NF overlap, making it a head-spinning choice for New Yorkers. In coming weeks, we have the Atlanta Film Festival, the Nashville Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, and the Tribeca Film Festival (making for three very different NYC film fests in a matter of weeks). Maybe April needs a little more film festival breathing room? Or, maybe not. While months like July and August are positively dead for American fest activity, who knows if any of these events would be better served at that time of year.
