Sundance award-winning doc, “The Cove,” is set for a summer U.S. release via Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, while all other territories have been nabbed by The Works International and James Atherton’s Quickfire Films Fund. Participant Media is also on board for the release.
William Morris Independent’s Rena Ronson and Submarine’s Josh Braun brokered the deals in the weeks following the film’s launch at the Park City festival. “While some timid buyers continue to let great films that just happen to be documentaries slip through their fingers, the smart buyers recognize a great film when they see it and act accordingly,” Braun told indieWIRE. “Submarine and William Morris Independent approached the sale of this film by treating it like the great emotional cinematic thriller that it is and by doing so, found the perfect partners for it.”
In the words of a description, “the film follows a high-tech dive team on a mission to discover the truth about the international dolphin capture trade as practiced in Taji, Japan.”
Written by Mark Monroe, the doc is an Oceanic Preservation Society presentation of a Jim Clark production, in association with Diamond Docs and SkyFish Films. It was produced by Paula DuPre’ Pesmen and Fisher Stevens and executive produced by Jim Clark and co-produced by Olivia Ahnemann.
