@Tribeca: In The Loop and Babelgum on Monday

Such is the fate of springtime festivals: one of the buzziest titles at Tribeca this year, actually premiered at Sundance. In The Loop, from British TV comedy creator Armando Iannucci, is a sly laughfest. Sure, it’s also about international crisis and war, but it’s still a light-hearted and pitch-perfect comedy full of memorable awkwardness. Immediately after seeing the film a few months ago, I described it as “The Office, if your office was the inner-workings of national government.” And, I feel that description still holds. The film has been the toast of Tribeca, where it has won over audiences and critics, as well as partygoers. Following a private reception on Sunday evening, IFC Films hosted a swanky party at a Penthouse in downtown Manhattan on Monday night. It was the perfect night, too, for a rooftop party. The weather was wonderful, which has only been the case every other day this past week. I didn’t see In The Loop castmember James Gandolfini in attendance, but the rest of the American cast was there in full force. It’s particularly sweet to see David Rasche (Sledge Hammer!) out and about.

Prior to the IFC event, a mass of people were enjoying the Babelgum soiree held in Tribeca. The web video destination handed out awards for its second annual Bablegum Online Film Festival, and jury head Spike Lee was on stage to do the honors. Check out Variety‘s list of the winners. This year’s Tribeca, which many admit seems to feel like a banner edition, continues through this weekend. More soon…
