Even for some critics who don’t like Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds here at Cannes, everyone seems to agree on one thing: the opening scene is terrific, and among Tarantino’s best screen renderings. Up there with the Uma Thurman needle sequence in Pulp Fiction or the “Stuck in the Middle With You” torture scene of Reservoir Dogs, in my opinion. And this opening scene for Basterds (which involves a quietly suspenseful interrogation by a cruel Nazi), shares something similar with those two examples. It’s about a small number of people in a small room, and no one’s sure if they’re gonna get out alive.
