Astro Boy Trailer Goes Online

Thompson on Hollywood

I grew up watching Japanese anime–I didn’t know it at the time, because it was dubbed in English. But I loved Kimba, Astro Boy, Speed Racer. This trailer for Imagi Studios’ animated feature Astro Boy, voiced by Nic Cage and Freddie Highmore, was screened at Comic-Con and left me cold. It doesn’t feel right. Summit will release it stateside in October.

Here’s the trailer.

Man, does this look terrible. There’s a quick cameo caricature of Osamu Tezuka, the artist who created Astro Boy, visible in the trailer, but this sure ain’t Tezuka’s Astro. Only the original b&w cartoon from 1963 caught the flavor of Tezuka’s original comic. Japan has done two different animated series based on it since, both in color, but neither matched the original. I’ve seen a lot of episodes from the original series in recent years and some of them are just amazing and still pack a powerful punch. Tezuka was way ahead of his time.
