Jackson's Lovely Bones Trailer

Thompson on Hollywood

A while back, DreamWorks showed me some footage from Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Alice Sebold’s bestseller The Lovely Bones ; I was knocked out by what I saw. The film looked strong, different, unusual. The images popped. Saoirse Ronin (Atonement) plays the 14-year-old girl who is murdered in 1973 and watches her family from “the inbetween.”

Paramount has released an Apple trailer which emphasizes the fantasy and thriller elements. It will play in front of Julie and Julia, which seems like a good fit: adults –and the Academy–are clearly the target audience for this movie, which opens December 11.

This is shaping up to be a good year for Stanley Tucci, who has juicy supporting roles in both Julie and Julia and The Lovely Bones.

Maybe it’s just men, but this trailer is awful. The book was mediocre, and the trailer makes the film look evenworse. Sorry Peter, everyone director has a bad film…

It does look very cool. I need to get over my grudge about axing Ryan Gosling. I’m almost there.
