Check out IFC.com for my latest semi-investigative report, “Sites Specific: Can Streaming Save Indie Film?,” on the latest round of indie streaming websites dedicated to the distribution of independent cinema, from the documentary-centric SnagFilms to the highfalutin internet cinematheque The Auteurs. If there’s one thing that these sites share in today’s tough economic climate, it’s a boldness to try something new when most businesses are scaling back — that, and the fact that they all have founders who are filthy rich.
I should clarify that the story does not address the current state of cable VOD (that’s for another piece I’m working on for another publication), which in addition to streaming, is being called the saving grace of indie film. In the not so distant future, of course, both platforms will likely be indistinguishable from each other, with all media ending up on our TVs (or our iPhones).
