Variety's Army Archerd Dies at 87

Thompson on Hollywood

Variety columnist Army Archerd has died at age 87 of a rare cancer. It marks the end of an era. He was a lovely man. We should all keep going so long.

Nobody is going to do a better job of writing about Army than Variety editor-in-chief Timothy Gray. Here’s the LAT and The Wrap.

I had the privilege of knowing Army for some 20 years. He was a civilized pro who defined an older, gentler era of entertainment journalism. When he gave up writing the print column at Variety after a record 52-year run, he wrote a blog, and kept a loyal online following until he stopped filing daily from his Variety office in mid-July. I salute you, sir. May I carry some of your integrity and gentility with me, always.
