First Award Screeners: Anvil, Trucker

First Award Screeners: Anvil, Trucker

Thompson on Hollywood

The first screener to the Academy membership Anvil! The Story of Anvil went out Thursday, right before an industry screening at the WGA attended by the likes of Steve Zaillian, Robert Culp, Edward James Olmos and Cameron Crowe. Oscar campaigning is a good thing. But the documentary branch of the Academy nominates its “short” list of fifteen, then the final five. Anvil, while well-reviewed and arguably far from just a music doc, has a lot to overcome. Here’s my current assessment of the doc Oscar race.

But the first “awards” screener to arrive at my house today was Trucker, starring Michelle Monaghan (which I’ve already seen).

I get the sense that more outside long-shots are nurturing Oscar hopes than usual this year. That’s because there are more marginal releases period.

Last year I got the screeners of all Best Picture nominees except Ben Button- I saw that in the theater, of course. So this year I hope to get ALL screeners of BP nominees.
