“Metropolis” to Return to the Berlin Screen

"Metropolis" to Return to the Berlin Screen

The original cut of “Metropolis,” Firtz Lang’s classic silent sci-fi urban drama, has been reconstructed and restored by the Friendrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation. The new cut of the film will be premiered at the 2010 Berlinale. The film will celebrate its 83rd year with this new cut and an accompaniment based on the original score by Gottfried Huppertz, which will be performed by Rundfunk-Sinfoneiorchester Berlin. The film, in its entirety, was thought to be lost until a print emerged in Buenos Aires in 2008 that held the lost scenes. The new print will be 30 minutes longer than the one currently available to the public. [Bryce J Renninger]
