Up in the Air TV Spot

Here’s the TV spot of Jason Reitman’s adaptation of Walter Kirn’s Up in the Air, starring George Clooney as an air-mile-obsessed executive, that was shown on the season finale Mad Men.

To its credit Up in the Air defies genre. It’s a romantic comedy with a serious edge. The romance is between George Clooney and Vera Farmiga as two business-class travelers who constantly fly around the country, obssessively collecting miles. Anna Kendrick works with Clooney, who gives bad news to people who are being laid off. Kendrick wants to do it by video conference call. Clooney doesn’t.

That trailer doesn’t tell me anything I need to know about this movie. What is it ABOUT? What genre is it? Is it a comedy? If so, why are there NO funny lines in it? And who is that blonde and what’s she doing there if it’s about a budding romance with that snotty, stick-up-her-ass brunette? Or is it?

I’ll pass.

Alright, I give. Maybe George should play Blomquist, after all. Starting to re-think my knee-jerk notion of Ellen Page as Salandar, however. Even in recent stills she looks way too young and sweet and unscarred. Role needs someone with a harder, spikier edge, less obviously cute. A global search for an unknown is is the only sane option.
