Avatar (Real)

Avatar (Real)

On Wednesday night, I ran down to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin with some family who had not yet seen Avatar. We checked it out, and I was anxious to see it again in a different format. Last weekend, it was fun seeing the new film in IMAX 3D at Manhattan’s Lincoln Square. I was a fan, but also felt a disconnect with the material. Maybe it was a disconnect with the IMAX celluloid, when Avatar is a very digital film. In other words, the RealD 3D version of the film is more faithful to the way James Cameron created Avatar, and it shows. Now that I’ve seen the RealD 3D version of the film, I urge everyone to do it this way. For those who haven’t seen the movie yet, choose RealD over IMAX. If you saw the IMAX version, see it again in RealD. Avatar becomes a slightly different and slightly better, experience. James Cameron’s latest spectacle still makes sense in IMAX, just probably after you’ve seen it once before in RealD… and you’re high.
