Avatar's Cameron: Feminist

Thompson on Hollywood

When Rebecca Keegan interviewed me for her terrific Cameron book The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron, I made a point of what a feminist he is. From Sigourney Weaver in Aliens to Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2, Cameron paved the way for such gun-toting action stars as Angelina Jolie. Cameron respects strong women: after all, he’s been married to Hamilton, Gale Anne Hurd and Kathryn Bigelow–who will likely be competing with him for the best director Oscar.

I saw AVATAR last night at the Hollywood premier and it dazzled. Ground breaking. Great story and I think Cameron’s best story that creates emotions for characters that i have never felt before in a Cameron film. Visually stunning and I believe game changing for the film industry. I just read the Futurist and it too is fantastic. Great jaw dropping stories told firsthand from different film casts, crews, friends, family and Cameron himself. Really well written and humorous. It’s a book I read straight through.
