Mo'Nique responds to her Oscar critics (about a month ago)

I guess you can’t blame most Oscar prognosticators, who have recently nurtured a Mo’Nique backlash, for failing to see this month-old episode of BET’s The Mo’Nique Show. It’s an episode dedicated to Precious, the film she stars in (and has won awards and acclaim for). Later in the episode, Mo’Nique addresses the criticism about her reluctance to participate in the annual awards race. Skip to the end of the episode, at around 36:40, and you’ll see what I mean. The summary: awards and acclaim are appreciated, but her performance is not about that. It’s about ending cycles of violence and abuse in families. I believe her, and I think her honesty is puzzling to some awards reporters. Here’s the episode:

By the way, Precious expands to theaters nationwide this weekend, following its Golden Globe nominations for: Best Picture (Drama), Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress. (FULL DISCLOSURE: Our sister company, Cinetic Media, sold Precious to Lionsgate for North American distribution. But, most people who know me know that I’ve been a big supporter of this film since before Sundance.)
