Overture Acquires Stone, Starring De Niro, Norton

Thompson on Hollywood

After the underwhelming Everybody’s Fine , one star in need of a strong role that connects with audiences is Robert De Niro. Maybe Stone will do it. Overture Films has picked up U.S. distribution rights to John Curran’s dramatic thriller, starring De Niro as a parole officer and Edward Norton as an arsonist who tempts him with his wife (Milla Jovovich). Norton starred in Curran’s The Painted Veil.

Mimran Schur Pictures and Millennium Films are financing Stone, which is produced by David Mimran, Jordan Schur and Holly Wiersma with Avi Lerner, Danny Dimbort and Trevor Short serving as executive producers, with Nu Image handling foreign sales.

I love De Niro, and I anticipate every movie of his with the hope it will be a return to form. It’s really a shame how often a talent like his has been wasted in the last two decades (exceptions like “GoodFellas”, “Casino” and “Wag the Dog” aside).

A biography of his I once read submitted the theory that, after “Raging Bull”, he thought there was no way he could ever better himself, so he started to phone it in. I’m not sure how accurate that is, but it doesn’t seem completely inconceivable, either. Brando could have said the same about himself after “A Streetcar Named Desire”, and then look what happened.

Overture acquired “Stone” several months ago; I don’t know why they didn’t announce it until now.

i used to love de niro. i’d see any movie if he was in it. that was back in the goodfellas days. not so much anymore. the project i like the sound of the best is michael mann’s frankie machine with de niro set to star. plot is a little been there done that, about a retired hitman who must return to work, but considering mann’s ability this role could put de niro back on track.

i like that he tried to expand into comedy/drama, but de niro needs to give us a gritty crime thriller now and then
