Polanski Gets Out of Jail Friday on $4.5 Million Bail

As expected, filmmaker Roman Polanski will get out of jail on $4.5 million bail. Swiss justice officials announced Wednesday that the director can move to his Gstaad chalet at 1 PM on Friday. Here’s the LAT:

A court will eventually rule whether Polanski should be extradited to Los Angeles to face sentencing for having illegal sex with a 13-year-old more than three decades ago. Swiss justice officials repeatedly had denied his bail requests, saying he was a flight risk. Under the terms of the bail, Polanski, 76, will have his phone calls monitored as well. Gstaad, a village of 2,500 with mountain views, has long been known as a celebrity hangout, having been home to Elizabeth Taylor, Roger Moore and David Niven, among others.

I believe Bob is right, although however you describe it the facts were clear enough: it was a pretty sordid affair. Although the “deal” the judge was going to give was reneged, still, I believe he should have faced up to the judicial system at the time and not gone on the run. Personally, I think he is a troll, but if I were to coach him years ago I would have said “face the music, Roman,” rather than go on the lam and have to worry about the authorities the rest of his life.

First of all, who is the “you” here? Anne Thompson is simply quoting the L.A. Times. And please can the McCarthyite BS for her failure to use your preferred choice of words.

I know it gives people a magic happy pill to hear the words “rape” preferably in conjunction with the word “anal” in connection with Polanski, but the fact is the charge he pled guilty to was “unlawful sex” — it is not called “statutory rape” in California. You can argue that it was miscarriage and that he was likely guilty of forcible rape, though that charge was not tested in a court of law. He was not prosecuted or convicted on charges of rape, so a reporter is actually venturing into editorializing by saying it was rape without using the word “alleged” in front of it.

MSM grows ever more irrelevant

He didn’t have “illegal sex.” He raped the child. Shame on you. “Insider” indeed.

oh the sweet price of freedom and the cha-ching of justice …
