Avatar Breaks $1 Billion Worldwide Mark After 17 Days

Thompson on Hollywood

Avatar is now the 4th-highest grossing movie of all time. It has broken $1 billion. Already.

And the first weekend of the year was the biggest ever, too.

IndieWIRE tracks the robust holiday b.o. for the indies–except for Nine, which is shaping up to be a major disappointment for the Weinsteins.

More analysis later. Here’s the LAT b.o. report:

“Avatar” was, once again, a big winner, dropping only 10% as it sold $68.3 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada, according to an estimate from distributor 20th Century Fox. That’s the highest domestic gross ever for a movie on its third weekend, blowing away the previous record of $45 million set by the original “Spider-Man” in 2002, even accounting for inflation.

Complete box office top-10 estimates (in millions):

1. ‘Avatar,’ $68.3

2. ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ $38.3

3. ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,’ $36.6

4. ‘It’s Complicated,’ $18.7

5. ‘The Blind Side,’ $12.6

6. ‘Up in the Air,’ $11.3

7. ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ $10.0

8. ‘Did You Hear About the Morgans,’ $5.2

9. ‘Nine,’ $4.2

10. ‘Invictus,’ $4.1

It’s anti-war, pro-environment. Aren’t we all??!?!

Avatar is not anti military. It’s anti military abusing it’s power. It’s anti military being used to fight the wrong wars for the wrong reasons.

The story is about a fictional situation where a private corporate army is used to slaughter natives to take the natural resources they want.

If that seems anti American to miss Molly, that says more about the current state of America, than it does about this movie.

this movie is hardly anti-american. nor is it anti-military. it is anti-invade-and-take-whatever-we-feel-like-because-we-can. anyways, the movie is great and i noticed anyone who said it would fail have been licking their wounds in the dark lol.

also how are you heading to becoming a third world country?

its amazing what people will say anymore.

It is sad that this anti-military, anti-American movie is so successful. I guess anti-America is the ‘in’ thing at the moment. Why don’t we become a third-world country now? Oh, wait! That’s where we’re already headed. Too bad; we had a good 200 years….

Mind blowing in every way. Do you think JC is kicking back smiliing right now?
