Golden Globes Predictions

Thompson on Hollywood

The Golden Globes, voted on by 84 idiosyncratic Hollywood foreign correspondents, are always tough to call. I pay heed to awards expert Pete Hammond, who tells me It’s Complicated and Avatar played well with the group, and I gather feedback from HFPA members, who are a mix of serious journalists, critics, red carpet interviewers and junket whores. I know they take their votes seriously. But they also have a tendency to vote for the stars they want to show up.

I’ll be blogging live from backstage, and will report later on the rounds of parties. IndieWIRE will keep you updated on each win. Here’s Peter Knegt’s take on who should win and who will win. We disagree on a few of these, so there could be some surprises.

Here are my best guesses:

Best Drama: Avatar
Best Actress, Drama: Carey Mulligan, An Education
Best Actor, Drama: George Clooney, Up in the Air
Best Comedy or Musical: It’s Complicated (everyone says it’s The Hangover, but I just can’t go there)
Best Actress, Comedy or Musical: Meryl Streep Julie & Julia (I thought Streep might cancel herself out with two, leaving the field to Bullock, but I changed my mind.)
Best Actor, Comedy or Musical: Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man
Best Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique, Precious
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
Best Animated Feature: Up
Best Foreign Film: A Prophet
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
Best Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
Best Score: James Horner, Avatar
Best Song: “The Weary Kind,” Crazy Heart
