Bening Talks Vanity-Free Roles in Mother and Child, The Kids Are All Right

Thompson on Hollywood

Sony Pictures Classics has a good eye for awards contenders. They scooped up Get Low and Mother and Child out of Toronto, and it’s likely that we will see both Robert Duvall and Annette Bening in the awards race this fall.

Bening dominates Rodrigo Garcia’s sprawling ensemble drama Mother and Child (May 7, trailer below), as a shut-down prickly older woman who seems to have given up on finding a mate. Through a series of events, she opens up and learns how to let go some of her baggage. Bening is also brilliant (and funny) as a gay parent with partner Julianne Moore in Lisa Cholodenko’s Sundance hit The Kids Are All Right, co-starring Mark Ruffalo as the couple’s sperm donor, which Focus Features will open July 7 (trailer below). Here’s my Sundance interview with Cholodenko.

In this (under-lit) flip cam interview, Bening opens up about feeling free to play women of a certain age–with or without glamour.

Sorry Anne: asking Annette Bening about fighting her age while filming her in a badly lit room with a pole sticking out of the top of her head. Hmmmmm…
