Fifteen hours or so before posing for this photo, artist and filmmaker Miranda July was in Seattle, told to get in a cab and go to the airport to attend the Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony. She started documenting her experience with her camera. “I made a movie of the red carpet, with all the photographers,” she said, after accepting her award, prompting press conference moderator Henri Behar to ask if the footage is for her next film. “No,” July reacted, “(it is for) the one I am going to show tomorrow on my website.”
I found today’s photo fitting because hers was the last American film to screen in the Critics Week section of Cannes. Until today. As we noted while announcing the sidebar roster today, David Robert Mitchell’s “The Myth of the American Sleepover,” from this last month’s SXSW Film Festival in Texas, is on the Critics Week slate.
