HBO Treme Hype

Thompson on Hollywood

More than ever, I am reminded that at this time of year, as much as I love movies, I’d rather be watching television.

This season I am happily following HBO’s WW II drama The Pacific, ABC’s magic puzzle Lost, NBC’s Tina Fey sitcom 30 Rock and FX’s neo-western Justified, along with my regular TiVoed programs At the Movies (soon to depart, alas), Oprah and Charlie Rose. Another HBO series debuts April 11th, the post-Katrina New Orleans drama Treme, from the one and only David Simon, the ex-journo creator of The Wire. He was aided and abetted by frequent collaborator David Mills, who recently died of a brain aneurysm.

This must-read NYT Magazine feature calls Simon the HBO Auteur. Exactly. And NY Mag interviews Mills. Salon raves. And here’s NPR  and Fresh Air.

We’ll post a review of the show later on.
