Please Give Nicole Holofcener More Money

Thompson on Hollywood

Please Give, writer-director Nicole Holofcener’s thoughtful, well-observed portrait of neurotic, flawed New Yorkers, stars her alter-ego Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt as husband and wife, and Rebecca Hall and a bronzed Amanda Peet as sisters caring for their aging grandmother (Ann Morgan Guilbert), who lives next door. Holofcener gets better with every film–all of which are must-sees, from Walking and Talking to Lovely and Amazing and Friends with Money. Holofcener plans to work again with Frances McDormand on a book adaptation.

Holofcener shot Please Give, financed by Sony Pictures Classics, in 24 days for just $3 million. “I shoot fast,” she says.

She’d do it again, she told me in our flip cam interview. But at a time when the indie film market is falling apart, she’d still like a little more prep, a few more days, some more art direction. And yet it’s great to see what can be done with so little. This happy/sad portrait of who we are now is one of the best films of the year so far.
