IFC Films continued its dealmaking on the Croisette today, scooping up US rights to two more films: Gregg Araki’s “Kaboom,” screening out of competition in the official selection; and Jorge Michel Grau’s “We Are What We Are,” from the Director’s Fortnight. The latter title will be released through IFC Midnight, the company’s recently launched genre label.
Jonathan Sehring, President of IFC Entertainment said, “‘Kaboom’ and ‘We Are What We Are’ are the perfect films for us. We’ve always wanted to work with Gregg Araki and, with ‘Kaboom,’ he’s delivered one of his best films to date. We also look forward to introducing Jorge Michel Grau to American audiences with ‘We Are What We Are,’ one of the most original films at the festival.”
Described as ” hyper-stylized “Twin Peaks” for the Coachella Generation, “Kaboom” has been viewed by critics as a welcome return by the cult director to terrain first approached in his “The Living End” and “The Doom Generation.” The film follows an ambisxual college freshman who stumbles upon a conspiracy in a seemingly peaceful seaside Californian community.
Mexican director Grau’s feature debut, “We Are What We Are,” presents a portrait of a family of cannibals who must contend with finding sustenance after their traditional “bread-winner,” their father, is gone.
The deals for both films were negotiated by Arianna Bocco, SVP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions for IFC Films and Wild Bunch’s Carole Baraton.
These two acquisitions join a slate of previously announced pick-ups by IFC, including Xavier Dolan’s “Heartbeats,” Antoine Blossier’s “Prey,” Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy,” Bertrand Tavernier’s “The Princess of Montpensier,” and, in partnership with Sundance Channel, a multi-platform release for “Carlos.”
