The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences president Tom Sherak is jumping the gun this year by announcing the show’s producers in June. The producers of last November’s first inaugural Governor’s Awards, film producer Bruce Cohen and TV producer Don Mischer, will do the honors on the 83rd Academy Awards telecast, which airs on ABC Sunday, February 27, live from the Kodak Theatre. Mischer will also direct the telecast.
Cohen collected an Oscar in 1999 as producer, with Dan Jinks, of best picture American Beauty. In 2008, he and Jinks were also nominated for Milk. Cohen also produced Big Fish and executive produced television’s Pushing Daisies.
Mischer met Cohen when he executive produced the TV special Movies Rock in 2007. Mischer is an old hand at big-event TV specials, from We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial and The Kennedy Center Honors to various Super Bowl half-time shows and the opening ceremonies of both Winter and Summer Olympic Games. He has produced specials with singers Barbra Streisand, Willie Nelson, Beyonce and Carrie Underwood. Mischer has awards coming out of his ears: fifteen Emmys, ten DGA awards, two NAACP Image Awards and one Peabody.
