– Russell Crowe is set to play Robert McCall in The Equalizer, the mysterious vigilante agent made famous by Edward Woodward in the 1980s TV show, reports the LAT. Crowe is also attached to Paul Haggis’s The Next Three Days, in which his character’s wife is wrongly accused of murder. Clearly, Crowe is drawn to characters that have something to fight for, with a few rough edges. The Equalizer currently lacks both a shooting script and a studio, so Crowe has time to brood over this character.
– Nicole Kidman and Nicolas Cage will star as a married couple taken hostage in Louisiana in Joel Schumacher’s brutally violent betrayal actioner Trespass, reports Variety. Making as much money as he can, financially-challenged Cage is also in negotiations to reprise his Johnny Blaze role in Ghostrider: Spirit of Vengenace, which is poised to be directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (who directed Crank and wrote Jonah Hex), according to Heat Vision. The original Ghostrider, despite poor reviews, grossed $220 million worldwide.
– A still from Julie Taymor’s The Tempest is circulating around the web in advance of the film’s December release (through Disney, who took it on after shuttering Miramax). Taymor’s aesthetic – from Broadway’s The Lion King to Across The Universe – is never dull. Nor is her cast: Helen Mirren as Prospera, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Chris Cooper and Djimon Hounsou as Caliban.
