Festival Premiers Go Online

The up-coming launch of Festival Scope, a new Paris-based facility for industry professionals offering simultaneous on-line screening access to films as they receive their festival world premiere, was announced on the opening day of the Cannes Market. Festivals that have signed up already include Melbourne, Sarajevo, Taormina, Hamburg and Paris Cinema. Festival Scope is a new independent company founded by Alessandro Raja, formerly of Celluloid Dreams, in collaboration with Lucie Kalmar, formerly of Wild Bunch and Mathilde Henrot, formerly of MK2. It is financed by private equity, sustained by the Research and Innovation in Audiovisual and Multimedia (RIAM) network, and cofinanced by France’s Centre National du Cinema (CNC) and French body Oseo. Michelle Carey, head of programming at the Melbourne International Film Festival, summed up the benefits offered by Festival Scope: Being so geographically far away can pose a challenge in accessing the latest and most innovative festival, films and filmmakers in person. Festival Scope will allow us to link in to a select network to better achieve this, while providing the opportunity for us to also champion smaller films we think are particularly special “Julian Newby, Cannes Market News May 13, 2010.

Juan Paredes,

This is an excellent idea. I hope they don’t price it prohibitively and that the picture quality remains high.

This is the future. It’s a great tool. I wonder how this will affect the sale of a property in other windows and whether participating in this, if you enter these festivals, is cumpolsory or optional.

PD. Been reading this blog for a month now. It’s a great resource. Thanks, Sydney!!!!
