Moscow International Film Festival, Market and Coproduction Market

Moscow International Film Festival, Market and Coproduction Market

Moscow! What a city! As soon as the plane’s passengers applauded at our easy landing, I knew I was going to enjoy this trip. The weather is spectacular and so is the city. 20 million inhabitants, huge architectural wonders with a river running through the city…is that the Volga? I realized suddenly that Russia surpasses any preconceptions I may have if only because of its vastness and variety of peoples.

Lots of familiar faces and friends are here at the Market, from Sonja Heinen of the Berlinale’s Coproduction Market, Martin Blarney of Screen International, Roberto Olla of Eurimages, Laura Wu of GoldCrest U.K., Christian Gaines of IMDb and Withoutabox, Tomas Prasek of Eventail, Harris Tulchin of Entertainment Media Consulting U.S. What is most noticeable is the crossing between the East and West of Europe, meeting heads of film funds that actually look for ways to coproduce — Bulgaria, Finland, etc. with France, Germany and Russia. And the attempt at managing the large countries of the world with the resources to make films which need coproduction partners, the BRIC countries as they are called here: Brazil, Russia, India and China. Seeing Moscow as part of a network of these huge countries whose management on every level seems inconceivably vast – how do they manage to allocate resources to building a film culture – that is what they have come here to discuss. Solutions on the person to person level we experience here may be small but, at their best, they can be far reaching into the major world festivals, theaters and souls of the people they succeed in touching.

Moscow International Film Market is targeted at International distributors and producers who aim their product at Russian and European markets. MIFF BUSINESS SQUARE is concentrating on efforts aimed at greater co-operation between the European film industry and its counterparts in the BRIC countries, i.e., Brazil, Russia, India and China.

The MIFF BUSINESS SQUARE program will provide the following activities:
• Moscow Co-production Forum
• BRIC Countries Film Finance Forum
• Baltic Event for East
• MINI EAVE MOSCOW 2010
