MTV Movie Awards: Bullock Should Have Kissed Betty White, Eclipse Clip, Cruise and JLo Dance

Thompson on Hollywood

As I’ve said, most awards shows are about people promoting themselves. Wouldn’t it be a great idea to get the three stars to intro the Twilight: Eclipse video? (It’s below, along with clips from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Last Airbender, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.) Let’s have lovable wise-ass Betty White and hunk Bradley Cooper give embattled star Sandra Bullock an MTV Generation award and everyone will give her a standing ovation and then Bullock will kiss Scarlett Johansson (who has continued working out since she made Iron Man 2). I would have preferred Bullock to kiss White, who quipped, “Honey, don’t you ever wear that dress backwards.”

Of course they all know what they’re doing. I am obediently putting up the Eclipse clip. And running the kiss photo–which will go round the world. Bullock knew it would move the conversation. “I love what I do, and I’m not going anywhere…I’m not dead,” she said, although her Aunt Luddy is. After the kiss, she asked: “Now that we have done that, can we please go back to normal?”

As for the actual winners, who cares? Okay, Twilight: New Moon won five out of seven awards including best female performance, Kristen Stewart, male performance, Rob Pattinson (UPDATE: MTV’s interview with him is below) , and best movie (here’s Peter Facinelli’s acceptance speech). In the second big kiss of the night, Pattinson clamped one on Stewart when they won best kiss. And Tom Cruise (aka Les Grossman) and JLo won back a few fans with their all-out disco dance.

What’s shocking wasn’t Betty White cursing or a poorly staged Scarlett Johansen and Sandra Bullock kiss, it was the fact that “Avatar” didn’t win any MTV awards. Wasn’t the argument that Sigourney Weaver made about James Cameron not winning best director based on her assessment that the Academy was “out of touch” with the movie-going public and that Cameron didn’t win another Oscar because he, “didn’t have tits”? If the movie-going (teenage) public had any say, “Twilight 2” would have won best picture.
