Doug Loves Movies

Doug Loves Movies

Doug Benson is a very funny guy. You may have seen him on TV or at a local comedy club; he tours all the time. Or you may be familiar with his stoner documentary Super-High Me. But I’ve gotten to know Doug because he hosts a podcast called Doug Loves Movies (formerly known as I Love Movies) that’s recorded in front of a live audience at L.A.’s comedy hotspot, Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. The heart of every show is a competition he calls—no kidding—The Leonard Maltin Game.

Doug is a dyed-in-the-wool movie buff, as smart as he is funny, and every week he gathers fellow standup comics and actors to play the game, in which he serves as quizmaster. The object is to guess the name of a movie based on—

—the cast list in my book, Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide—reading from the bottom up—and a few isolated phrases from my review. Contestants bid against each other on how many (or few) names it will take for them to identify the film. Guests have included Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Jon Hamm, Kevin Pollak, Bob Odenkirk, Tom Arnold, Tom Lennon, and Weird Al Yankovic, to name a few.

Doug Benson anchors the proceedings with me, Samm Levine, and Morgan Murphy.

I didn’t know about this right away, I must confess. It took my uber-hip daughter to turn me on to the show and the game; that led to my first appearance as a guest with Doug early this year. I can’t believe how many people have commented on it since! I was happy to make a return appearance last week, along with actor-comedian Samm Levine (who was Private Hirschberg in Inglourious Basterds) and comedy writer-performer Morgan Murphy (who’s currently a staff writer on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon). Like Doug, they know their movies pretty well. We all had a good time, and I can assure you, playing the game isn’t easy! If you’d like to download or stream the show—or past episodes—you can find it at the iTunes store (free of charge) or at

I think it’s really great that you have been on Doug Loves Movies. I stumbled on his podcast while looking around for an entertaining podcast where people talk about movies. I wasn’t sure I’d like his Podcast, but I’ve grown to be really kind of addicted to it. The game named after you is just a delicious piece of cheesecake!! Thanks for being a really nice guy

Please post a review of Super High Me…I know Doug is your buddy, Joe Dante style, but I’m dying to know what you thought.

I have this terrible feeling that you’re not going to give “Super High Me” a favorable review and that it will affect your relationship with Doug and the podcast. If you don’t care for his film, please please please, work it out. When you’re on his show it’s the highlight of my week!

Wish you could be on the show every week!

So glad you returned for a second round on Doug Loves Movies! Please do it again, it is always a pleasant surprise and you have great stories to tell!

Doug + Leonard = perfect entertainment.

Hey Leonard! You are in Norris telling the students about your start at Entertainment Tonight right now… and then I stumbled across a link to this — love Doug Benson, and will def have to take a listen to the podcast!

-Andrew, upstairs, in Norris.

Mr. Maltin is terrific on the show. Actually all of the guests were and usually are funny.

Btw, I’m visiting your blog for the first time via Benson’s tweet.

I listened to last week’s DLM twice, I had to play it for my wife, too. I think you and Doug actually could do an awesome show radio/tv show together just talking about movies. There’s a good chemistry between you two.

This is the coolest thing ever…
The explanation of the game should be required reading with a quiz to boot just to save ten minutes of podcast time each week

You are a splendid player of your own game :) Looking forward to your review of ‘Super High Me’. Thanks

You’re kidding!! This guy actually created a game out of Maltin’s Movie Guide? Brilliant! Wish I’d thought of that first. Don’t know Todd, I’m pretty sure I could give you a good run this one.

Todd Brown

Oh man! Give me one chance…just one chance to play this game, and I will show that I am the master! Been avidly reading the Leonard Maltin movie guide for the past 21 years (I am currently 30). I know this guide like the back of my hand. Sign me up!

I am an avid listener to Doug Loves Movies, and your appearances have been my favourite episodes!
