Of course Casey Affleck finally comes clean in the NYT–just before I’m Still Here goes into wider release. Joaquin Phoenix was acting. “It’s a terrific performance, it’s the performance of his career,” he says.
This whole thing annoys me. They think it’s hysterically funny. I think it’s a joke on the audience. A prank. Not serious at all. Part of my annoyance comes from the fact that Affleck refused to answer questions and deliberately misled the press in Venice and Toronto. Tell us what the thing is and let us judge it accurately. Don’t prevaricate, then say, “Ha!!” That’s a kid playing games, not a serious filmmaker.
By the way, I hear repeated stories about Affleck making things tough for distributor Magnolia. Picky, controlling, wanting-his-way kind of manipulations. Not that this is anything new on the PR/marketing front. But Magnolia knows what they’re doing and if you make a deal with them, you also have to know that they don’t have much money to play with.
Do I want Joaquin Phoenix to ace the Letterman show next week and come out smelling like a rose? Sure. I hope he’s A OK.
