Samuel Goldwyn Films is an independently owned motion picture company committed to development, production and distribution of feature films offering original voices in uniquely told stories.
Samuel Goldwyn Jr. founded the company in 1979. It grew out of his vision for a motion picture company with the scope of a major studio and the heart of a family-owned, hands-on business. He used more than fifty classic American film titles owned by the original Goldwyn Company, including “Wuthering Heights,” “The Little Foxes,” and “The Best Years of Our Lives” as building blocks for the current multi-tiered organization.
The company is dedicated to working with both world renowned and emerging writers/filmmakers and committed to entertainment that offers original voices in uniquely told stories. This steadfastness is best exemplified by the Academy Award® nominated “The Squid and the Whale” and “Super Size Me,” “Amazing Grace,” and Julie Delpy’s hit comedy “2 Days in Paris.” Goldwyn’s recent slate included the critically hailed “Elegy” starring Academy Award nominee Penélope Cruz and Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley and the box office smash “Fireproof.” “Harry Brown,” starring Academy Award winner Michael Caine as a vigilante seeking revenge on the teenage gang members who killed his best friend, is currently in theaters. “Mao’s Last Dancer,” directed by Academy Award nominee Bruce Beresford opened on August 20th. Types of films in distributor’s slate
While we do not focus on specific kinds of films, we are partial to those which cater to underserved audiences. Our slate is consistently diverse – we work in all genres ranging from documentaries to anime from American independents to foreign language films.
Advice for filmmakers:
It’s important for a filmmaker to have knowledge of his/her prospective distributor(s). How many films are on the distributor’s slate? If a company is releasing 30 movies a year, I would think it would be difficult for them to devote the necessary attention to yours given they will mostly likely be slotting another one of their films in direct competition. And, who could blame them when there are only so many viable weekends? It is better for a film which needs to be handheld to be on a smaller slate where a distributor can give it a strong focus.

Acquisitions are handled by Peter Goldwyn, Vice President of Acquisitions and Tristen Tuckfield, Director of Acquisitions.
Number of films released theatrically each year:
We release between nine and twelve movies a year.
Distribution platforms other than theatrical:
While we release on all platforms, our main focus is on the theatrical release first and foremost.
Number of films released exclusively via VOD/DVD or “alternative” means of release:
Every film we buy is released theatrically. We do not do any direct to DVD or VOD.
Number of films acquired at festivals:
About 90% of our films are acquired at film festivals.
Festivals where distributor has acquired films in the last two years:
We have acquired films at Sundance, Toronto, SXSW and Berlin in the last two years.
