– Universal is finalizing a deal to land the latest public-domain brand-name fairy tale, Snow White and the Huntsman, written by Evan Daugherty and to be directed by commercials-turned-feature director Rupert Sanders.

Two rival Snow White projects are reportedly trying to attach Natalie Portman: Snow and the Seven and Relativity Media’s 3-D The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, which has been described as the “whorey” Snow White. The Disney fairy tale we really want to see real doesn’t arrive until 2013: Disney’s live-action Maleficent, written by Tim Burton collaborator Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland); Disney hopes to lure Burton as well as Angelina Jolie as Snow White Sleeping Beauty’s wicked nemesis.

– Fernando Mereilles’ 360 cast already boasts the brains-beauty-talent of Rachel Weisz in the latest update of Arthur Schnitzler’s lovers’ merry-go-round, La Ronde. Now Anthony Hopkins, Francis McDormand and Eminem, reports Production Weekly, are in talks to jump into the big sex-filled bed. Hopkins’ involvement appears official, while the other two are just beginning to unbutton their trousers. We can’t wait to see who ends up with whom.

– Sir Ian McKellan can rest easy now that Variety has announced that the BBC, at least, is staying highbrow. The BBC has lined up some uber-talented directors and writers – Sam Mendes, Jane Campion and David Hare among them – “as part of a drive upscale in its domestic drama output.” Mendes will be directing an “epic film version” of Henry V (BBC also has Richard II and Henry IV Parts I and II planned – all to screen on BBC2 in 2012). Campion and Hare are both working on original content, including Top of the Lake, about a pregnant teen who goes missing, which Campion co-wrote and will direct in her native New Zealand. Something to look forward to.

OK, I must out myself as a fairy tale nerd. Maleficent is the villain of Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty.” Therefore, the proposed Tim Burton project will be an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, not Snow White.
