This year’s Toronto fest kicked off for me on cloudy afternoon as my Porter air flight landed at the city’s very convenient downtown airport (pictured). My first TIFF was back in 1998, a year I’ll never forget for a couple of reasons. It was my introduction to Christopher Nolan and his work. He was in the fest’s Discovery section with his first feature, “Following.” And another buzz movie that year was “Very Bad Things.”
As I recall, the film debuted on the first Friday of the fest, the same day that salacious details about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky were revealed in the Starr Report. That night, at the “Very Bad Things” after party, hostesses passed out cigars! No kidding.
