Media Watch: THR Adds Film Reporter Appelo, Awards Blog The Race, TV Critic Goodman

Thompson on Hollywood

With the dates looming for the last issue of The Hollywood Reporter print daily (Friday, October 29) and the first weekly issue (Wednesday, November 3) THR is continuing to add staff. They are also figuring out how they will cover the all-important awards season.

Editorial director Janice Min and executive editor Owen Phillips have decided to use a combo of in-house Oscar experts, film editor Gregg Kilday and features editor Stephen Galloway, who will launch their weekly awards column, The Race, in the first THR weekly. Joining the THR team as film reporter is Seattle import (and valued TOH contributor) Tim Appelo. The veteran film writer (EW, The Nation, The Oregonian, The Seattle Times, Seattle Weekly, Seattle City Arts Magazine) will work the awards beat (among other things) and run THR’s Awards Watch page.

THR is also adding critic Tim Goodman as chief TV critic for both their online and print editions; his blog will be a companion to James Hibberd’s popular Live Feed TV blog. Goodman hails from The San Francisco Chronicle, where he was critic, columnist and blogger (The Bastard Machine).

Meanwhile, ex-THR digital media editor Andrew Wallenstein, who was recently laid off, now joins PaidContent as senior editor for the digital-entertainment business. Good fit. PaidContent says his job will be to “shine a bright light on the revolution in distribution that is changing film and television,” and he will also aid in the developing of new editorial features.
